In favor of the border wall The border between Mexico and the United States was never secure, literally and figuratively, it consisted of an old, beet up, chain link fence. The fence did not really do the job it was put there to do, which was to clearly define the boundaries between Mexico and the United States. The fence was a laughing stalk, flimsy and full of holes, clearly letting everyone who sized it up know we really didn’t care that much to protect our boundaries. Building a better, more efficient wall, which speaks to our credibility, has been addressed, thanks to President Trump. This is a great idea. I will provide evidence to support that this idea is great in my report. I will also provide reasons behind the walls opposition and tear them down. Having a fortified boundary will help to eliminate the number of drugs that come into the country. Presently, Mexico accounts for perhaps more than half of U.S. imports of Marijuana and Heroin, also moving large amounts of cocaine (Reuter, Ronfeldt v). Mexico has been a platform for many types of smuggling in the United States for a long time, including stolen automobiles and migrant workers. These operations have been highly organized and developed rapidly during the 70’s. Through corruption in Mexico’s political system many powerful smugglers have been able to establish positions of protection for themselves (Reuter, Ronfeldt v). Destined for the U.S. market, Mexican production of heroin and marijuana rose rapidly throughout the late nineteen eighties. For at least fifty years, the U.S. has been pressing the Mexican government for more stringent drug control, their refusal to allow U.S. agencies to closely monitor the functioning of drug control has exacerbated tensio n between the two countries. The U.S. government can do very little, if, as some officials and analysts believe, corruption has impeded more effect drug control. The roots of corruption go deep in Mexico and cannot be substantially reduced by U.S. pressures. It has been argued that most of the drugs that enter the country from Mexico come through ports of entry, this is true, however, most is not all, and drugs are still entering by crossing the borders. The border wall will tremendously slow down drug imports to the U.S. Restrictions against illegal immigrants, combined with anti-immigrant hostility in the United States has created an economy of generally undesirable jobs (143). This illegal economy now involves prostitution and trafficking. Prostitutes supplied by Mexican traffickers have customers who are men from immigrant communities as well as non-Latino U.S. men. Woman and girls in prostitution are purchased everyday by thousands of male tourists who enter Mexico from the United States. Seeking jobs in the United States, woman and youth must rely on labor traffickers who then lure them into sex trafficking with false promises of jobs, sometimes kidnapping them and selling them. In 2003, an investigation was done on the trafficking of Mexican girls to brothels near San Diego. Hundreds of girls from ages twelve to eighteen from rural Mexico were either tricked or kidnapped into the U.S. border by traffickers or pimps, over a ten-year period. More than fifty brothels and outdoor farm labor sexual exploitation camps in San Diego County are controlled by criminal networks (150). Trafficked girls are sold to military personnel, U.S. tourists, and migrant farm workers. Caves made of reeds served as brothels at the edge of a field, was discovered in one particular case. Many of the girls even had children whose lives were threatened as leverage not to escape. Everyday hundreds of farm workers sexually assaulted these girls in prostitution after being transported to these sexual slavery camps. The wall along with the cameras and Law Enforcement officials at the border will provide more protection both for the U.S. but also for Hispanic woman and girls. A young woman who, known only as Maria, escaped from human traffickers and witnessed babies and children being â€Å"sold to order† to US citizens, did an interview with channel four news. Maria had experiences inside one of the gangs and had â€Å"significant information† and possessed a â€Å"remarkable memory† of things that went on inside. Maria told of Mexican and US gangs working together to supply a demand in the US. Maria was 16 when she was lured into the gang. Maria said the gang sold young women to the US as sex slaves after being held in a house on the Mexican border. Maria had been promised a job and given presents by gang members but was instead drugged, raped, and sold to men. Maria said these men also dealt in children and remembered one occasion when the gang was contacted by a woman in New York who needed a nine-year-old boy and a seven-year-old girl in three days. The gangs would prowl the streets of poor areas looking for children and steal th em. The US state department estimates more than 20,000 young woman and children are trafficked across the border each year. (thegaurdian.com) The border wall will provide more protection to victims of human and sex trafficking. Illegal aliens frequently enter the country in search of work opportunities. Many employers welcome them in exchange for paying them lower wages then they would have to pay U.S. workers. This employment is illegal under the immigration control and reform act (IRCA). Employers ignore this law completely and knowingly hire illegal workers. Others hire illegal workers not knowing they’ve used fake documents because they have failed to properly vet the employees. There is no requirement to verify documents presented by workers therefore this failure to properly vet is made easy and E-verify, an electronic system to verify documents, is voluntary on a nationwide basis, therefore employers do not have to comply. Defenders of illegal aliens, religious organizations, business lobbyists, and ethnic advocacy groups assert that illegal aliens only take jobs Americans will not do, â€Å"This is patently false because they are working in jobs in which U.S. workers are also employed- weath er in construction, agriculture harvesting, or service professions†. (www.fairus.org) When it is prevalent in a sector of the economy to hire illegal alien workers employers rely on illegal workers who will work for less in order to protect their bottom line. The wall will also help bring back more jobs for law abiding citizens. One reason for not wanting the wall is that â€Å"†¦.it does not reflect the reality of how the large majority of persons now become undocumented† (125). In many cases studies have shown the majority of immigrants did not illegally cross a border, they were admitted on non-immigrant visas, and then violated the terms of their visas or overstayed their admission period. One study in 2014 found that two thirds or sixty six percent of those who arrived were overstays. This does bring new information to light; however, it also points out that if sixty six percent were overstays then forty four percent did actually enter illegally. That number is still significant. This report represents information about the undocumented population’s mode of arrival in 2014. This trend has changed since 2005 when most arrivals were EWI’s (entries without inspection). This article questions the ability of a wall to address these issues. However, a wall will assert authority and d emand respected boundaries. When you break the law, you should be punished. Legal action against law violations should not be singled out for only U.S. citizens, therefore it should not even be possible to enter illegally. I do not think it is right to come into someone’s home and start off by breaking the law. As for the argument of the wall being racist. Inanimate objects cannot be racist. All countries have the right to secured borders. A country without secured borders is not a country. Furthermore, we can’t ignore the security of the country because it makes some people uncomfortable. So, in short, the wall will protect us from illegal drug smuggling, protect woman and young girls from being sold into sex trafficking, provide more jobs to tax paying, Law abiding citizens. He also portrays the landscape as grimey and a distate, † his work place, towered vast and white above the grimey landscape. † This is the constant effect Orwell uses to make the setting come across as bleak as possible. In the opening chapter of Orwells novel, The main theme is the party of Big Brother and the absoloute power. This theme comes across as very controlling on all party members, as they are totallly evicted from freedom. Orwell uses 3 phrases that gives an impression of the shear power and authority of Big Brother, â€Å"WAR IS PEACE, FREEDOM IS SLAVERY, IGNORANCE IS STRENGTH†, this is irony that is used to show power and it gives the main messages and theme of the party. Immediately in the opening pages, the reader knows that whinston is gong to die due to thought crime. They also know his weaknesses as he resents the authoritarian regime and tries to disobey Big Brother. Orwell has used a slight form of tense, where Whinston uses the words â€Å"DOWN WITH BIG BROTHER†, By this time in the novel the reader knows that consequences of this is certain death. But whinston escapes lucky, which is a relief to the reader. This gives the idea that whinston is already beginning to neglect the party and the control of Big Brother. Orwells novel is written in a depressing tone which merges well with the setting and atmosphere. Orwell is often reflective and see’s the viewpoint of whinston and also the party, but while he does this he displays the shocking power. Orwell writes very punctual and uses a large amount of drama to unsettle the reader, and they do not know whats coming next. In this novel Orwell writes in third person so that the reader knows exactly what is happening, he also has used a lot of dramatic and brutal language to portray the hellish dystopia. Overall, Orwells 1984 is a bold and shocking vision of the future, and he displays some of the most pollitical extremism in is novel than any other. His first chapter has an effective start to his novel as it unsettles the reader, but gives them a vast idea of what Big Brother and whinston are going to stir up later in the book.

In the extraordinary novel, Year of Wonders, Geraldine Brooks exposes the difficult yet admirable life of Anna Frith, trapped in a community caught in desperate times. As the plague strikes this small village, ignorance and a fear of the unknown become dominant sensations in Eyam in 1666-1667. Anna is completely unaware of the opportunities to grow and succeed that surround her as she struggles with uneducated parents throughout her childhood. London Tailor, George Viccars, opens Anna’s eyes to the world, inspiring her to learn more about herself and the way in which the world works after bringing the devastating illness known to Anna as, â€Å"God’s wrath made manifest† to the village. Anna works hard and dreams of finding a cure for the plague after the loss of her two sons. Anna turns to herblore and together with motherly-like figure Elinor, the pair study together after initially not being â€Å"interested† in such beliefs. Anna then goes even further, extending her knowledge in the health area after delivering a child by pure instinct. This is the first of many as from this Anna gains in confidence. She slowly begins to improve her understanding of father Josiah and step mother Aphra and why they came to be how they are, although still despises them for their oblivious actions. However it is at the novel’s conclusion, when Anna flees Eyam due to revealing circumstances that she finally recognizes her ignorance to the world she has been living in. She is able to see most clearly her abilities and skills that have been withheld from her due to an uneducated life. A child’s upbringing can shape their experiences for the rest of their life; this was the case for Anna Frith. Anna never got to familiarize herself with a normal childhood, brought up by her father Josiah Bont whom she witnessed kill her biological mother at a young age. She was married off to Sam at the tender age of fifteen years old under the instruction of her father. Anna was ignorant to the world around her, as she didn’t know any better. A â€Å"timid† girl, Anna despised her father stating â€Å"he loved a pot more than his own children†. This situation worsened when Josiah married new wife Aphra, who looked down upon Anna. Anna has the clear view that, â€Å"to my stepmother Aphra, I was always a pair of hands before I was a person, someone to toil after her babies†. She taught Anna nothing but how not to care for you own children believing it was â€Å"ill fortune to love a child until it walks and is well grown†. Anna was easily confused at this and wondered how Aphra could think so. If it wasn’t for a natural motherly instinct in Anna, she may well have followed in Aphra’s footsteps unwittingly. Anna never knew she had the ability to stand up to her father and is very conservative about her opinions of him although she trusts her own decisions. The arrogance and plain ignorance of Josiah Bont led to Anna’s childhood being very uneducated and undesirable, resulting in Anna not being well prepared for the years of devastation to come. Anna discovers a wider world the minute deadly disease is brought into her life. It is London tailor George Viccars, bearer of the plague, who opens Anna’s eyes to world beyond Eyam. When Viccars arrives at Anna’s croft, â€Å"he brought the wide world with him†. Anna had not had a man of any real significance in her life since the death of Sam, until the arrival of George Viccars. He showed her that there was more to life than everyday chores in a small village. Captured by his talents, Anna begins to realize the opportunities to learn that surround her. Seeing the work of Viccars and hearing the stories of his life, Anna, â€Å"wished to know how things stood in the world†. Anna is devastated at the death of Viccars, and it is at this point in the novel where she learns of the plague as a fatal disease. Although the plague spells the end of a lifetime for many villagers in Eyam, including Anna’s two sons, it is the beginning of a new life for Anna. Her first instinct is to help in as many ways as she can, attending the dying bedside of all sufferers, caring for widowed wives and orphaned children. However she does not only wish to care for the ill, but dreams of finding a cure to stop the small pandemic. She approaches the ever intelligent Elinor, who inspires her to learn. Anna expresses, â€Å"when she had discovered that I hungered to learn, she commenced to shovel knowledge my way†. The plague intrigues Anna, as the reader observes her transformation from being completely illiterate to becoming deeply involved and gaining a slightly better understanding of the way the human body functions. Together Anna and Elinor research further into a mysterious practice known as herblore. Anys and Mem Gowdie are seen as the â€Å"witches† of Eyam, which ultimately leads them to their death. For Anna however, she believes the work of the Gowdie’s was innocent, and has a strong desire to keep the ractice of herblore alive. Anna openly shares that she never had a close relationship with Anys, yet before she was murdered, the pair bonded. It is when Anna learns of Anys’ relationship with George Viccars, which intrigues Anna to get to know Anys and learn of her beliefs and values. Anys teaches Anna that it is acceptable to be independent. Anys believes she was, â€Å"not made to be any man’s chattel† and following this Anna admires her for, â€Å"listening to her own heart rather than having her life ruled by others conventions†. The plague’s devastating effects require Anna to research herblore. Together with Elinor, the duo explore and grow in this area of expertise together. Anna is able to quickly grasp many herblore concepts and invent new herbal remedies in hope that each new one may be a good treatment for the plague. Anna goes on to deliver several children in the area. At first she delivers a baby with no experience only motherly instinct. Over time, she develops the skills necessary to repeat this many times. With the help of Elinor, Anna begins to learn and see the world as a bigger place, as well as have better understanding of it through education brought about by the plague. When it is revealed to her that Michael Mompellion had mistreated Elinor, Anna has the knowledge of the wider world to make the decision to flee Eyam. Although well educated, Michael Mompellion reveals a dark secret that tests Anna’s awareness and knowledge. When it is exposed to Anna that Michael had been denying Elinor sexual desires as punishment for her aborting a child when she was younger, Anna is shocked. She is forced to cope with the fact that the man who she had admired since being the Rector of the village, had betrayed her, â€Å"beautiful friend, full of affection, made for love†. Although this doesn’t sit well in Anna’s mind, it uncovers much confusion for her. She comes to the realization of why she had never seen Elinor and Michael touch and concretes in her mind that Michael is a man of very strong beliefs. Anna comes to an understanding of why Michael punished Elinor in this way, as he believed it was almost too difficult to, â€Å"atone for a life†. Anna loses her faith in Michael but does not lose hope in her life to come as she flees Eyam with adopted child Aisha, biological daughter of Mrs. Bradford. It is the beginning of the end at this stage of the novel for Anna as she leaves her hometown after dealing with the plague and much death, to create a new life full of joy and hope. It is in her new Muslamic country where she meets husband Ahmed Bey, whom she marries in order to be able to stay under his roof and learn medicine. Ahmed agrees to this as he needs female doctors to deliver children as husbands do not let him do it himself. Anna continues her studies and grows in her literacy skills. It becomes apparent that by this stage Anna has set herself up in the world with a good standard of knowledge and education. It is clear that by the end of the novel, Anna Frith underwent a journey from ignorance to knowledge. From living in the small village of Eyam with no direction given to her by her parents, Anna overcomes the plague and its terrible effects by being eager to learn. She develops intellectually during the novel, learning how to read and write from scratch, as well as researching remedies and delievering babies. By the conclusion of the novel, Anna is a well-educated young woman, aware of the opportunities and world around her.
